When and where do I need to be?

We’ll meet at 9am at the WFSE Office (5th Floor, #503) located at 906 Columbia St SW, Olympia, WA 98501. There is plenty of parking on the street and a few reserved spots across from the building. Please call the day before your scheduled day to see if there’s a reserved spot available. We will reimburse your travel expenses, including parking fees.

Will there be coffee/food?

Hi, I’m April. Have we met? During Session coffee is what keeps me going. We will provide coffee, other refreshments, and snacks in the morning, as well as lunch in the afternoon. Please let us know if you have dietary restrictions, and we’ll take care of the rest.

What if I don’t know who my legislators are?

No problem, that’s where we come in. By registering in advance, we can look up your district and will make appointments for you. We’ll take care of the who, the when, and the where – all you have to do is show up.

What if I’m not sure what to say, will there be training?

Politics can be intimidating, but don’t worry; we’ve got your back. There will be a brief training and talking points that you can use as a guide during your meetings. We’ll make sure you’re comfortable before leaving for your appointment, go to the appointments with you if you’d like, or pair you up with a more seasoned WFSE member.

Here are 5 quick tips to help you prepare:

1.    Be on time (it’s the best way to start any meeting)
2.    Introduce yourself (who you are, where you live, what you do for the state)
3.    Tell your story (Legislators need to hear about the programs you support and how your work is making a difference in the community)
4.    Be polite and try to keep emotions in check (crying is awkward for everybody)
5.    Ask for a specific action (you didn’t come all this way for nothing)

What should I wear?

Wear whatever you’re comfortable in. Legislators are people just like the rest of us; you don’t have to don a 3-piece suit or formal gown to meet with them.  Of course, they don’t call us the green machine for nothing and we’d love for you to wear an AFSCME green t-shirt. No shirt? No problem. We have a supply here in case you need one.

Can I bring my children/friends/family member/neighbor’s dog sitter?

Anyone is welcome to participate in a WFSE lobby day. We need the support of our friends and family to protect the vital jobs we perform in our communities.  A lot of members bring their children and use it as an opportunity to introduce them to politics.

How should I address my Senator or Representative?

Excellent question! We suggest addressing your legislators as Senator (insert name) or Representative (insert name) until they tell you otherwise. Once they tell you to call them by your first name, you’re in!

What if I can’t make it on my scheduled day?

We’ve worked really hard to make your appointments and are looking forward to hosting your lobby day, but we understand sometimes things come up. If you need to reschedule, please call us as soon as possible so we can change your appointment.

Have a question I didn’t answer?

Well, nobody’s perfect . . . please contact me anytime: April Sims ( at 800-562-6002.
