Student, members’ support bolsters negotiations at Tacoma CC

tccx.111214aWith the support of classified staff who’ve had a contract for years, the Tacoma Community College Student Support Staff Bargaining Team made progress at Nov. 12 negotiations.

The team has a partial day of negotiations today (Nov. 18) and two full days set for Nov. 20 and 24.

At the Nov. 12 session, WFSE/AFSCME Council 28 President Sue Henricksen and Vice President Thornton Alberg joined the negotiations.

The TCC Classified Staff, students and other allies joined the team for lunch to show support for the negotiating team. This much-appreciated support conveys the message to management that this contract must get finished.

“We are making some progress but as always, bargaining is a rocky road,” the team reports.

The team presented five prepared counter proposals on contract articles, while management brought three.

In the end, both sides reached tentative agreement on three articles:

• Article 3 Union Rights: Clarifies union rights under the collective bargaining agreement.

• Article 18- Leave without Pay: Describes the purpose and process for requesting this type of leave.

• Article 43-Grievance: This is the process by which the contract is enforced.

Important articles still on the table after the Nov. 12 session included: Discipline, Seniority, Layoff and Recall, and Compensation.
