TESC SSSSU Bargaining Update, 2/18/12

The TESC Exempt bargaining unit had their historic, first bargaining session Wednesday (Feb. 8), at The Evergreen State College campus.??

The team opened bargaining with a statement explaining the key role exempt staff play in achieving the College’s role and their goals for bargaining and creating a union.

Says the team: “We formed our union to address our individual frustrations and to transform those into a collective response to initiate real change that will result in higher retention of Student Affairs staff. We believe that retention of Student Affairs staff will ultimately result in retention of students. We also aim to remove barriers to equity such as pay, uneven workload, fair treatment, work schedule, and at will status. Our intent is to work collaboratively to address these issues.”??

The team shared a complete copy of the initial proposal, including proposals to improve working conditions and communication. The balance of the day was spent discussing ground rules. No agreements have been reached but the tone, thus far, is cooperative and open.??

The team will bargain again on Feb. 22, 2012.
