UW bargaining update 3/6/14



Local1488-buttonThe University of Washington Bargaining Team met yesterday (March 5) to nail down the last proposal language and identify issues that will need a bit more specialty input from Local 1488 members doing the work.

As stated in the last update, the team has incorporated ideas from members, stewards and officers and from union staff and other contracts that should give the team the tools to improve working for the UW and its medical centers, branch campuses and remote sites.

Speaking of the medical centers, the team says: “We hope you already saw the major win we bargained regarding the testing of custodians for the infection control premium pay! It is a huge win and means that many workers who had ‘failed’ have now passed and will receive back pay for time already worked. It means workers will now be tested by DEMONSTRATING that they know how to do the work. They will not be tested on subjects that are not part of actual infection control.” (More on this major victory in Friday’s hotline.)

On the contract front, the team has again asked the employer to schedule a “start date” for talks and hope to hit the table early this spring (the UW loves to delay things until students leave and the media tends to forget the place for a while).

Last thing, all spring and summer the contract team, local officers and staff will be holding “lunch and learn” meetings at worksites to provide some food, answer questions, ask questions and just keep folks in the loop. In the very near future we will get started AND provide contact information for setting meetings in your work areas.
