WSU team presses wage re-opener fight

Members representing bargaining units at Washington State University met with management Tuesday, Sept. 3, on the issue of raises that were negotiated a year ago, requested through the Legislature but not funded in the final budget.

These are the WSU wage re-opener negotiations. And they will continue as the union team presses the university to provide relevant financial information.

To recap, at the end of September 2012 the university made an 11th-hour offer of 8 percent cost-of-living adjustments over two years in order to complete the contract in time for the budget office to include it in the state budget.

WSU insists that the request to the Legislature is all they needed to do to fulfill their obligation under the 2013-2015 contract.

Though the university has approved a raise of 4 percent for all faculty and administrative staff funded by WSU, they have not thus far been willing to extend the same COLA benefit to bargaining unit members.

WSU cited a lack of funds to achieve that goal. The Federation team has requested an audit of the University’s finances and will return to the negotiation table following the audit.
